Dorothy Progress

I've been working on the visual design of Twisted Dorothy. I've looked up a bunch of different Punk/Goth outfits and mixed them up to find something that works. The first drawing in both pictures are from the original Dorothy.

After some discussion, I have narrowed down my choices. The red ticks are a large range of choices whilst the green was the final choice.

Life Drawing two

That day was an off day for me. I wasn't in the right state of mind for drawing and it showed. I hadn't eaten and I was preoccupied with other issues. My drawings ended up being very stiff and technical. I need to learn to relax while I am drawing. I think those pre-sketching exercises will help. I also need to look for the models centre of balance and make sure it's evident in my drawings. I did some more life drawing when I got home using Pixel Lovely but with little improvement.

Assignment 1 - A

For assignment 1-A we were required to create...

One Main Prop Design Sheet –based on provided scrip (i.e. Dorothy's Ruby Shoes, Tin Man's Axe, or maybe the Sign for The Haunted Woods)
One Main Location Design Sheet –based on provided script (i.e. establishing, long shot of the Haunted Woods set, with the Yellow Brick Road running through it)

I haven't fully confirmed every detail about the character designs so I decided to leave them out of the prop design. With little other option I decided to go with the Sign. Considering this a 'sweet' forest rather than evil I didn't want the sign to look decrepit, but well kept and rather new.

Despite polling my options and the highest vote going to one of the Enchanted Forest thumbnails, I decided to go with the Candy Forest. I felt it better suited the Wicked Witches motif and I have ideas on how the main characters will interact with their new surroundings.

This took longer than I had anticipated and unfortunately not quite to my likeness, but I am still happy with it and I know I'll enjoy using this in part B.

Life Drawing One

Today was the start of Life drawing classes. This was my first try at something like this and I have learned quite a lot. There is some areas I need to improve on though, I need to draw faster during these sessions and not be bogged down by minor details.

The Haunted Forest

For our first assignment we need to draw a re-imagined Haunted Forest. To do this we looked up many different reference pictures to aid us. Because my idea is to reverse the looks of the characters the haunted forest should reflect that theme, so I looked up pictures of enchanting forest and candy.

From here I drew up some thumbnails.

More Wizard of Oz concepts

Today I've been working on brainstorming the Tin Man.

I played around with the proportions and size of his body parts, initially thinking of making him look fearsome. Then I went with a sadder look with hunched over posture and drooping helmet plume and overall he looked a lot more intimidating, in my opinion.

After that I played with an idea of a more gruesome Wizard of Oz with some of the characters being actual murderers. Scarecrow would take the lead lamenting on if he had a brain then maybe he would consider the damage he's causing, Tin Man would follow along, wondering if he had a heart then maybe he'd feel the compassion and regret to stop and Lion is stuck with them but doesn't have the courage to stop them.

This took a very dark turn.

Intro

This blog is for my Life Drawing and Character Design for Visual Storytelling Assignment. Based on studio tasks I need to develop an on-line portfolio composed of life drawings, concept drawings, designs and textual notes completed in studio sessions as well as out of class. The contents will reflect learning curve related to life drawing skills, as well as ideas, concepts and designs for characters. This will eventually result in a remake of a scene from ‘The Wizard of Oz’ (1939), in particular the Haunted Forest Scene.
Before the Tutorials started, I had a go at designing some of the characters. I’m trying out a reverse theme where the good characters look like antagonists and the bad characters look like protagonists. I’ll do a comparison with the final product and show the differences.
